Science Outreach
Let's Talk Science strives
to improve science literacy through leadership, innovative educational
programs, research and advocacy. We motivate and empower youth to use science,
technology and engineering to develop critical skills, knowledge and attitudes needed
to thrive in our world. Let's Talk Science reaches hundreds of thousands of
youth and educators annually through its nation-wide science outreach.
Teachers in the Edmonton area can request to be paired with a volunteer from
the University of Alberta. Our volunteers are mainly graduate students studying
a variety of scientific subjects. This program is offered at no cost to teachers or volunteers,
ensuring that all potential volunteers, teachers and schools have access to
this excellent program. Volunteers normally visit the teacher’s classroom twice
during the school year to explore science using hands-on, minds-on activities.
How teachers benefit
Participating teachers gain the experience of a one-on-one relationship with a current -University of Alberta researcher. Our volunteers can:
- lead the class through activities or demonstrations that are custom-designed to meet the needs of your class and curriculum
- provide their expertise in their specific area of scientific research
- act as a positive role model for your students
- help your students to develop an understanding and appreciation of the science behind their everyday lives
