Calgary high school students get SET

This Saturday, May 19, Let’s Talk Science Outreach volunteers at the University of Calgary will hold the annual Science, Engineering and Technology Challenge!

 

The SET Challenge is based on the popular reality TV series the “Amazing Race”, and is the biggest science outreach initiative undertaken by Let’s Talk Science Outreach at the University of Calgary – attracting over 200 student participants!

The SET Challenge is aimed at high school students in grade 10-12, and aims to motivate students to new levels of effectiveness and accountability. This Challenge will encourage teamwork and cooperation between the students who will be working in teams of 6 along with a teacher  from their school. All of the major science topics covered in the Alberta high school curriculum will be represented at the event.

Several prizes will be available to potential winners throughout the day, including a significant financial award to the winning school’s science program (1^st place: $750.00, 2^nd place: $500.00, 3^rd place: $250.00) and individually-awarded prizes for the winning teams.

Science Rendezvous

On May 12, 2012, Canadians across the country will be taking part in Science Rendezvous!

Science Rendezvous is a free, grassroots festival that brings science to the people through engaging, informative and interactive events. Many of our Let’s Talk Science Outreach volunteers will be taking part in activities at this annual festival!  

Let’s Talk Science Outreach volunteers will bring hands-on activities and exciting demonstrations to children and families. From the top research institutions in Canada to libraries, farmers markets, and even a zoo, there is bound to be an event happening near you.

University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo kick-off the 2012 All Science Challenge!

Today, over 200 Grade 6, 7 and 8 students are competing in the All Science Challenge competitions taking place at the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo. These two events are the first of 22 All Science Challenge competitions at university and college sites across Canada. 

To begin the all day science event, teams test their knowledge by answering questions on science-related topics such as earth sciences, psychology, physics and biotechnology in a game-show-style format. In the afternoon, students compete in a design challenge, where competitors build an object using only the materials supplied to them. A previous challenge asked students to construct a bridge capable of holding a full water bottle using only plastic cups, duct tape and sticky notes. The team with the most points at the end of the two rounds becomes the All Science Challenge champion!

The All Science Challenge is a free national event run by the Let’s Talk Science Outreach program. Twenty-two sites are holding an All Science Challenge this year from Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador to the University of Victoria in British Columbia. The competitions are taking place between April 24 and May 28.
